In today's History lesson, we learnt about Florence Nightingale's journey to Scutari and the horrors of war she encountered when she arrived there. During the input, I read a paragraph containing this information to the children; however, I also played a video of "Siege of Sevastopol" sounds and images as an auditory and visual stimulus. A study looking at methods of classroom instruction found that combining visual and auditory learning styles can improve the retention of information (Rose 2013). When talking to the children during the plenary, and after the lesson, the images and sounds had seemed to deepen their understanding of how the Crimean War had been experienced by the people at the time.
