Today, we used Purple Mash software in class to make our own bar charts illustrating our favourite flavours of 'healthy' juice. The software enabled the children to input their own data, collected during a Science lesson, and produce a bar chart which they could then print out and compare with their peers. A study by Ruthven et al (2008) found that teachers saw the use of graphing software as a contributing factor in improving students' production, so increasing the efficiency with which topics could be covered. I certainly found this related to the work we did today; as the pupils could create graphs rapidly and accurately using the software, the pace of my lesson was effective.
