Keeping Safe -  Why is it important to stay safe online?

Most of us are ‘connected’ via our computers, tablets or mobile phone. Technology is a valuable resource for learning, gaming, socialising with friends and keeping in touch.
But if you use it, you have to be aware of how to keep it safe. If you don't, you could be at risk of bullying, fraud or even
something more serious.

Remember:
unlike seeing someone face to face, over the internet people aren't always what they seem.

The above video is a really child-friendly, accessible way to address topics such as e-bullying, privacy and social networking.

Something I have found interesting on placement is the number of children using social networking sites (even with a 13+ age limit!) and photo-sharing applications such as SnapChat. We have encouraged the children to stay safe online and have a poster displayed in class. The children are all aware of the following Top Tips:

  • Only communicate with trusted people that YOU know.

  • Keep personal details (birth date, address, pet’s name or even teacher!) to yourself!

  • If you receive a message or see a picture that you don't like, show it to a teacher or parent.

  • Make sure your passwords are kept private- remember them so you don't have to write them down!

  • If you leave your computer - log off straight away!

  •

  • Above all, if you feel uncomfortable about ANYTHING you see online- TELL AN ADULT!
